In 2019, we launched our Carbon reduction pilot programme with 17 farms across New Zealand, that are also Co-operative shareholders. With funding from MPI's Sustainable Good and Fibre Futures Fund, we were able to run workshops and using Overseer, look in detail at the vegetation and sequestration rates on each farm. The outcomes of the pilot form the foundation of our Net Carbon Zero programme, which is now rewarding participating suppliers with Carbon removal payments.

Adding value through carbon reduction

By understanding each farm in detail we can explore where the additional value might sit, either by balancing total farm emissions against sequestration for carbon-neutral product claims, or creating long term partnerships between shareholders and those companies wishing to purchase carbon credits. We will continue to work closely with Silver Fern Farms Limited to develop opportunities for our shared suppliers. At the 2021 Plate to Pasture Farmer Conference, Silver Fern Farms announced its intention to launch a Net Carbon Zero certified Beef product into the USA. We're pleased to confirm that 'Net Carbon Zero By Nature' Angus Beef is now on shelves in USA supermarkets.
